About Knead Massage
Massage is maintenance, not luxury
Knead is a small team of vetted, insured massage therapists in towns across England - built by a former NHS nurse who has spent twenty years on the massage couch and got tired of how hard booking a good one was.
How we got here
From hospital wards to massage couches
The short version: a nurse who loved massage couldn't understand why booking one was still so painful. So he fixed it.
Before Knead, I was an NHS nurse. I worked in cardiac care, in intensive care, and out in the community with people managing long-term health conditions. Those jobs teach you something that stays with you: serious trouble rarely arrives out of nowhere.
Discomfort often builds gradually. Many of us simply get very good at ignoring the early signs.
I've also been a massage client for twenty years - and I'm now a qualified Level 3 Sports Massage Therapist myself, because I wanted to understand the work from the other side of the couch too. For me massage sits in a rare overlap: genuinely enjoyable and genuinely good for you. Exercise is good for you, but it's often hard work. Meditation is good for you, but it's hard to stick at. Massage is the one thing in that category I've never had to talk myself into.
What baffled me was how hard it was to book one. Trawling through individual websites and Instagram pages. No consistent way to compare qualifications. Phoning around in office hours, then days of back-and-forth to land on a time. It felt absurd that you couldn't just see who was good, see who was free, and book.
So in 2024 I built it. I'd already spent years building We Run, a UK-wide running coaching company that has worked with more than 16,000 runners, so I knew what it takes to find genuinely good people and keep standards high across a team. Knead applies the same thinking to massage: a team of therapists I'd happily book myself, real prices, live availability, and a booking that takes a couple of minutes.
Knead is small on purpose. It's me, a few people who help behind the scenes, and the therapists themselves. I interview every one of them before they go live, and I'd rather list four excellent therapists in a town than forty average ones.
Why the name?
It's kneading - the thing a therapist's hands actually do - and it's "need", because we think regular massage is something your body needs rather than a reward you have to earn. Yes, it's a pun. We stand by it.
What we believe
Four things we won't budge on
Maintenance, not luxury
You don't wait for your teeth to fall out before seeing a dentist, and you don't wait for the warning light before servicing the car. We think your body deserves the same logic - regular attention, not crisis management.
Evidence over hype
We focus on what massage can realistically help with: easing muscular tension, helping you relax and making your body feel more comfortable. No toxins, miracle fixes or wellness jargon. If we can't say it plainly, we don't say it.
Consistency beats intensity
One massage won't change your life, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we see again and again is that people who come back every month or so get far more from it than people who book once a year when something hurts. We'd rather see you regularly than rescue you occasionally.
Trust is the whole product
Massage is personal. That's why every therapist is qualified, insured and DBS-checked, why we interview each one before they go live, and why we run a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behaviour - from either side of the couch.
Vetted by us
We interview every therapist before they go live
Certificates can be checked in minutes. Whether someone listens, adapts and treats the person in front of them takes a conversation - so John still talks to every therapist himself. The bar is simple: would we book them for our own backs?
17 therapists and counting, every one of them known personally.
Level 3 in massage therapy as a minimum. Many of the team hold Level 4, Level 5 or degree-level qualifications.
Professional liability insurance and a DBS check, both confirmed before a single booking is taken.
Every therapist talks to John before they go live. Qualifications on paper aren't enough on their own.
Therapists are a proper part of the team, not names on a list. We know them all personally and stay in touch long after they join.
Where we work
Towns we cover
We're growing steadily rather than everywhere at once - we'd rather arrive in a town with the right therapists than pin a flag in every one. Here's where you'll find us today.
Not near any of these? We're growing - message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you when we reach you.

Are you a massage therapist?
We're always looking for therapists who care about the work as much as we do. Set your own prices and schedule; we bring pre-screened clients and handle the admin.
One last question
When did you last feel properly recovered?
Not just less tired - actually recovered. If you have to think about it, see which vetted therapists near you have appointments this week.
